12/09/08 - Actors wanted
A new SAFE@LAST project will deliver preventative workshops to young people in Rotherham aged 10 - 14 educating and informing them of the dangers and realities of running away. Workshops will be delivered in secondary schools across the borough and SAFE@LAST will also be taking part in this years Crucial Crew delivered at South Yorkshire polices Lifewise centre based at Magna Centre for Science and Adventure.

SAFE@LAST will be delivering a 15 minute scenario to the year six children which attend the Crucial Crew event. They are looking for volunteers who would like to take part in the delivery and are available during 9.00am till 3.00pm in September, October and November. Volunteers will be asked to commit to at least five days delivery. Full training will be given and no experience is necessary. Expenses will be paid.

Newly appointed Runaways Education Officer Katie Eastburn said "SAFE@LAST is very excited to be working in partnership with South Yorkshire Police at the Lifewise Centre. It's a brilliant opportunity for us as with all Rotherham schools being invited we can reach so many young people who might be at risk in our community. We hope to inform them that running away is dangerous and there are other options available to them and services that will help them. We are looking for confident and enthusiastic volunteers to help us deliver the programme. If you're interested in drama, teaching, young people or just doing something different and positive we want to hear from you."

12/09/08 - Charity event is huge success
SAFE@LAST launched its second annual BIG sleepout event to crowds at Parkgate Shopping on 1st August.

The BIG sleepout is an event aiming to raise awareness and funds for SAFE@LAST which receives very little statutory funding and is reliant on the generosity of the local community to continue its vital work. Supporters are asked to sleep rough at Parkgate Shopping with minimal comforts to experience what a night on the streets is like for the thousands of young runaways who sleep rough every year.

The BIG sleepout launch was very successful with 83 supporters signing up to take part. Many young people are sleeping rough is support of their peers who may feel that they have no other choice than to sleep rough.

Supporters who signed up were invited to create webpages on the day to help them with their fundraising. Those at the event also feasted on a 6ft Subway sandwich while enjoying entertainment from Rob McVeigh from BBC1's 'Any Dream Will Do'.
12/09/08 - SAFE@LAST worker goes above and beyond
SAFE@LAST worker Katie Eastburn is going above and beyond the call of duty this September when she will be jumping from a plane to support SAFE@LAST.

Katie started working at SAFE@LAST at the end of June 2008 as a Runaways Education Officer. Her role is to provide preventative services to children and young people in Rotherham aimed at educating and informing them of the dangers and realities of running away from home.

Since starting at the charity Katie has become so passionate about the issues surrounding young runaways that she has decided to face her fears and jump out of a plane at 13,000 feet to raise funds for the charity.

Katie will complete her tandem sky dive with the Red Devils from Langar Airfield in Nottinghamshire. She will climb to 13,00ft (2 ½ miles up) and then jump from the plane with her instructor freefalling for 45 seconds before deploying the parachute at around 6,000ft and drifting to the ground.

Katie said "I am incredibly nervous about the skydive. I don't like heights at the best of times so being 13,000ft up with nothing between me and the ground is going to be terrifying - what if the chute doesn't open!? However, even though I'm scared I'm going to make sure I do this for all the Young People in South Yorkshire who need SAFE@LAST services. When I am in that plane I am just going to be thinking about them and how scared they must be when they spend a night on the streets."
